Macron condemns violence as riots erupt during nationwide anti-inflation protests

Mass protests against rising inflation turned violent in several French cities, prompting President Macron to denounce the chaos and pledge prosecutions.

Approximately 550,000 people participated in anti-inflation demonstrations nationwide, yet a segment resorted to vandalism, setting fires and looting shops in Paris, Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux and Lille. Police deployed tear gas and water cannons, making over 400 arrests according to the interior ministry, while the CGT union claimed a higher turnout. Violent incidents included a protester in Saint-Etienne losing a hand to a police grenade and a similar injury to a teenager in Lens.

President Emmanuel Macron posted on X that there is "no room for violence" and promised prosecution of those who attacked prefectures, town halls and businesses. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu echoed the condemnation, labeling the unrest as "ultraleft" orchestration and urging unity against chaos ahead of upcoming elections.
