Macron labels ultra-left groups as seditious and tightens protest rules
President Emmanuel Macron warned that ultra-left factions are planning seditious actions and announced strict limits on upcoming demonstrations.
During a morning security council at the Élysée attended by Sébastien Lecornu and intelligence officials, President Emmanuel Macron described recent ultra-left activities as "extremely dangerous" seditious acts intended to overthrow the Republic. He criticized the intelligence services for not foreseeing the weekend's violent incidents that accompanied cost-of-living protests. Macron announced that only demonstrations requested by trade unions will be allowed on Saturday, and they must follow routes that safeguard commercial and public property; elsewhere, protests will be prohibited.
He emphasized a tougher response to criminal acts accompanying the unrest, while distinguishing them from the political motives. A separate meeting on Monday will gather representatives from schools, universities, unions, employers and local authorities to continue dialogue on legitimate grievances. Additionally, a defence council is scheduled for Friday.
