Macron warns that war has returned to Europe, calls for renewed unity
President Macron told a crowd in Metz that, 75 years after Robert Schuman’s declaration, Europe must act again to safeguard peace, security and its values.
At a ceremony in Metz, President Macron declared that war has resurfaced on the continent, urging Europe to renew the effort that followed Robert Schuman’s 75-year-old vision. He called for sustained aid to Ukraine, reinforced European sovereignty, and protection of democratic values against misinformation. Referencing the historic Franco-German reconciliation in Lorraine, he cited Schuman, Konrad Adenauer and Alcide de Gasperi as founders of post-war Europe, while noting that many other nations have also contributed.
Macron emphasized the need for greater competitiveness, home-grown technology, data control, and a European approach to AI, climate neutrality by 2050, and digital safety for youth. He warned that democracy dies not only from missiles but when dialogue ceases, and urged Europe to act as a sovereign, united, democratic force.
