Madeira readies infrastructure for new Atlantic CAM submarine fiber link
Regional officials say the works to host the Atlantic CAM submarine cable between Madeira and Porto Santo will be finished by late October, ahead of its planned launch.
During a site visit in Machico, regional secretary Pedro Rodrigues confirmed that all infrastructure required for the Atlantic CAM submarine fiber optic cable linking Madeira and Porto Santo will be ready by the end of October. The construction, carried out by EMACOM, involves trench excavation and linking the cable to the Água de Pena data centre, which will serve as a backup to the Funchal centre. Atlantic CAM is a new Portuguese subsea network that will eventually connect the mainland at Carcavelos and Sines with the Azores islands of São Miguel and Terceira and the Madeira archipelago.
The initiative is funded under the Recovery and Resilience Plan through a partnership between the Portuguese state and the European Union. The first segment, connecting Sines with Porto Santo and Madeira, is slated for activation in the first half of the year, enhancing digital service reliability for the autonomous region.
