Madison Gas and Electric has struck a deal with fusion startup Realta Fusion to explore building a 200-megawatt, grid-connected fusion power plant in Wisconsin, with construction envisioned for the mid-2030s. The utility is also making an undisclosed equity investment, providing Realta with engineering, permitting and site-selection assistance, as well as access to interconnection locations and financing. Realta is repurposing a former Oscar Mayer factory in Madison as its research and development center.
This partnership exemplifies a growing pattern of utilities partnering with a handful of fusion firms—including Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Helion, Type One Energy and Proxima Fusion—to secure long-term, carbon-free baseload power amid rising demand from AI data centers and the intermittency of wind and solar. While the timeline remains long, utilities view early collaboration as a way to de-risk the capital-intensive fusion sector and prepare for future grid stability challenges.
