Madrid Court Advances Begoña Gómez Corruption Trial Pending Technical Software Report
The Audiencia Provincial of Madrid has received the indictment in the “Begoña” case, with the trial awaiting a technical assessment of the Complutense University software.
Following the retirement of Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, the “caso Begoña” was transferred to the Audiencia Provincial of Madrid, which will designate the presiding judge for the forthcoming trial. Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is accused of influence peddling and embezzlement, allegedly involving her Moncloa aide Cristina Álvarez. She has petitioned the court to summon the chief executive of Telefónica, multiple Google directors, and a former employee as witnesses.
The defence has pledged to submit a technical opinion from specialists on the software linked to her Complutense University department, promising delivery no later than four months after the oral phase begins. The court now holds the complete case files (volumes 34 and 35) and will set the hearing schedule.
Why it matters
The trial tests political accountability in Spain, involving the prime minister’s spouse and alleged misuse of public office.
