Madrid hosts third 'Diálogos para la Seguridad' focusing on Europe's role amid global crises

On Thursday, Madrid's Centro Superior de Estudios de la Defensa Nacional hosted the third Diálogos para la Seguridad, a high-profile security conference organized by EL PAÍS. Miguel Jiménez opened the session, followed by an opening address from Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and a closing speech by Defence Minister Margarita Robles. Delegates debated the impact of hybrid wars, Russia's invasion of Ukraine now in its fifth year, and recent US-Israel strikes on Iran and the resulting regional retaliation.

The agenda also addressed defence budget increases in Morocco, China, Algeria and NATO allies, and the broader need for deterrence. Additional focus was placed on Spain's lack of a defence culture and the strategic threats it faces, alongside the pressure from Washington for Europe to raise its military spending.
