Madrid judge accepts lawsuit against Sofia Puente over alleged misuse of grandchild law instruction

A Madrid criminal court has admitted a complaint filed by Hazte Oír against Sofia Puente, sister of Transport Minister Óscar Puente, for possible prevarication in a legal instruction on the grandchild law.

In Madrid, Judge Inmaculada Lova of the Tribunal de Instancia Plaza 35 has formally accepted a complaint lodged by the association Hazte Oír against Sofia Puente, the sibling of Transport Minister Óscar Puente. The allegation concerns alleged prevarication in an instruction issued while she headed the Department of Legal Security and Public Faith within the Justice Ministry, which sought to broaden the so-called grandchild law.

The judge found the procedural requirements and standing of the complainant satisfied, allowing Hazte Oír to act as a popular prosecutor in the preliminary inquiry. She ordered both Sofia Puente and the association to reply within ten days to the Fiscal Ministry's reports issued in July and October, and to provide relevant documents from the Madrid Instruction Court No. 21. After reviewing the responses, the magistrate will determine whether to pursue further investigative steps or to close the case. The association Reconciliación y Verdad Histórica was not recognized as a party because it did not file properly.

Why it matters

The case could affect the credibility of a senior justice official and has political implications for the Transport Minister's family.
