Madrid mayor vows criminal complaint against former government delegate over Sol camp
Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida said the city will file a criminal complaint against ex-delegate Francisco Martín for allegedly allowing the prolonged encampment at Puerta del Sol.
In a council meeting, Madrid’s mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida declared the city’s intention to bring criminal charges against former Government Delegate Francisco Martín, citing his failure to act on the unauthorized encampment at Puerta del Sol. Martín, who stepped down after being excluded from the PSOE candidate list for the upcoming November elections, is accused of permitting a “clear crime” by not preventing the occupation.
Almeida noted that the municipality has imposed over 200 sanctions and submitted an administrative demand to the central government. He also mentioned that the complaint will be filed after the administrative period ends, provided the camp remains. The mayor criticized the lack of coordination between municipal and state authorities and urged immediate removal of the squatters.
Why it matters
The case could set a precedent for municipal authority to hold higher officials accountable for public-space management.
