MAGA Evangelicals Eye Mike Huckabee as Potential 2028 Presidential Standard-Bearer

Evangelical leaders within the MAGA movement are discussing Mike Huckabee as a possible candidate for the 2028 presidential race, hoping to restore their influence after Trump.

Journalist Sarah Posner reports that evangelical figures tied to the MAGA wing are scouting Mike Huckabee as a potential standard-bearer for the 2028 Republican nomination, aiming to regain the clout they lost under Donald Trump. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, presidential contender and former ambassador to Israel, is praised for his overtly religious, folksy style and his staunch defense of Israel’s right-wing government, aligning with Christian Zionist beliefs that view the modern state as biblically significant.

The speculation was sparked by Christian Broadcasting Network reporter David Brody, who cited comments from Christian nationalist organizer David Lane urging pastors to consider Huckabee. While supporters like Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and former RNC faith-engagement director Chad Connelly see him as a bridge between pro-Israel evangelicals and MAGA skeptics of U.S. Middle-East involvement, critics label his end-times theology as a “death cult.”

Age concerns—Huckabee would be 73 in 2028—and the appeal of younger contenders such as Marco Rubio and JD Vance pose additional challenges. Posner concludes that the buzz reflects more about evangelical attempts to reassert kingmaking power than a realistic presidential bid.

Why it matters

It shows how evangelical factions are trying to reshape Republican leadership and U.S. policy toward Israel.
