Magnetic nanoparticle blood test identifies amoxicillin allergy with 98% sensitivity
A new magnetic nanoparticle assay detected amoxicillin allergy in 98% of confirmed cases, far outperforming the standard ImmunoCAP test.
In a pilot study, scientists used 30-nanometre magnetic particles to capture amoxicillin-specific IgE antibodies from serum samples of 94 individuals, 50 of whom had confirmed allergy. The magnetic nanoparticle system reached 98% sensitivity and perfect specificity, dramatically surpassing the commercial ImmunoCAP test, which detected about 17% of true allergies, and a polymer-based RAST, which showed about 38% sensitivity.
The particles’ iron-oxide core and silica-dendrimer coating allow magnetic separation and high-area antibody capture. While the early results are promising, the authors stress the need for broader clinical validation, standardized protocols, and regulatory approval before routine use. If validated, the test could reduce unnecessary penicillin avoidance, lower healthcare costs, and help combat antibiotic resistance. The technology may also be adaptable to other beta-lactam antibiotics.
