Magnitude 4.9 quake rattles eastern Japan, no tsunami or nuclear alarm
A magnitude-4.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan early Tuesday, reaching intensity 4 in Ibaraki and Saitama, with no tsunami warning.
The tremor occurred at about 4:45 a.m., registering intensity 4 on the JMA scale in Ibaraki and Saitama and lower levels across Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no tsunami risk. Japan Atomic Power Co. reported that the Tokai No. 2 nuclear plant showed no irregularities. The quake’s epicenter was in southern Ibaraki at roughly 50 km depth.
