Magnitude-6.0 quake hits Banda Sea, tremors felt across Maluku
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Banda Sea at 6.56 pm local time, 148 km deep, with shaking reported in several parts of Maluku and no tsunami threat.
At 6.56 pm local time on Friday, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred in the Banda Sea at a depth of 148 km, with its epicentre 162 km northeast of Southwest Maluku. The seismic event was generated by subduction activity along a thrust fault in the region. Residents in Amahai (Central Maluku), Damer and the Babar Islands experienced strong shaking, while Saumlaki and Tiakur reported lighter tremors.
BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Wijayanto confirmed that tsunami modelling indicated no risk of a wave and that no aftershocks had been detected as of 7.15 pm. The agency will continue to monitor seismic activity and has advised the public to remain calm, avoid unverified information, and stay away from any buildings that may have been compromised.
