Magnitude 7.0 quake strikes off Ogasawara Islands, no tsunami warning issued

A preliminary magnitude-7.0 earthquake occurred beneath the Ogasawara Islands, about 1,000 km south of Tokyo, without generating a tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake originated west of the Ogasawara archipelago at a depth of roughly 470 km. It reached intensity level 3 on Japan’s seismic scale in parts of the islands. Despite the distance, shaking was felt across eastern and northeastern Japan as seismic waves traveled through the Pacific plate. No tsunami alert was issued following the event.

Why it matters

The quake shows how deep seismic events can be felt over large areas even without a tsunami risk.
