Magnitude-7 quake rattles remote Nagqu county in Tibet amid recent regional disasters

A magnitude-7 earthquake struck a high-altitude county in Nagqu, northern Tibet, late Tuesday night, with no confirmed casualties yet.

Late Tuesday night, the China Earthquake Networks Centre detected a magnitude-7 quake centered in a remote county of Nagqu, northern Tibet, at a depth of roughly 6.21 miles. The tremor was located about 250 miles from Lhasa and was felt in the surrounding region, though officials have not confirmed any injuries or fatalities. This seismic event arrives only two months after a severe glacier-driven flood devastated parts of Nepal and after earlier deadly earthquakes in Tibet, including a 7.1-magnitude shock in Tingri County last year.

Tibet lies atop the converging Indian and Eurasian plates, intersected by major fault systems such as the Altyn Tagh and Xianshuihe, which generate frequent strong quakes. The recent UN climate loss and damage fund board approved a $20 million package for Nepal’s flood reconstruction, marking the fund’s first allocation to a country, though disbursement will depend on a forthcoming proposal. The region’s vulnerability to both geological and climate-related hazards underscores ongoing risks for millions of residents across the Himalayas.
