Mah Sing applauds 2027 budget steps to make homes more affordable

Mah Sing Group Bhd welcomed the 2027 Budget’s measures aimed at lowering living costs and easing home-buying for first-time and middle-income Malaysians.

Mah Sing Group Bhd praised the 2027 Budget for introducing policies that raise household disposable income and cut upfront costs for homebuyers. Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum noted the continuation and expansion of stamp-duty exemptions, now covering properties up to RM750,000 with partial relief beyond RM500,000, and extending the existing relief to the end of 2030. He welcomed a RM20 billion housing-credit guarantee scheme designed to assist 80,000 first-time buyers, especially the self-employed.

Additional support includes increased funding for the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah programmes and measures to improve access to affordable daily necessities. Leong said these steps will help first-time and middle-income families while bolstering Malaysia’s residential property market and long-term economic competitiveness.

Why it matters

The budget measures could lower barriers to homeownership for many Malaysians and stimulate the housing sector.

How the sides frame it

Center coverage emphasizes the budget's continuation of homeownership support and existing financing schemes, while right-leaning coverage stresses a broader definition of affordability that includes rentals, living costs, and sustainability factors.

CENTER

Coverage portrays the budget as prioritising homeownership and extending existing assistance schemes for first-time buyers rather than introducing major reforms.

RIGHT

The right emphasises

  • inclusion of the rental market in affordability calculations
  • linking housing costs to transport, utilities and energy efficiency
