Maharashtra Sets July 2027 EV Deadline, Pressuring Bike-Taxi Operators to Adapt

Maharashtra requires bike-taxi fleets to replace petrol two-wheelers with electric models by July 2027, raising issues of financing, charging stations and regulatory clarity.

Maharashtra has imposed a July 2027 deadline for bike-taxi operators to switch all vehicles from gasoline to electric, aiming to improve urban air quality. Stakeholders argue that the shift will only succeed if drivers receive financial support, clear licensing guidelines, and incentives aligned with manufacturers. Gowri Natarajan of Yulu stresses that phased targets would allow fleets, OEMs and financiers to coordinate investments.

Adequate charging and battery-swap infrastructure, plus swift land and electricity approvals from municipalities, are seen as critical. Vimal Singh SV of ReadyAssist notes that expanded maintenance and roadside-assistance services will boost driver confidence. The combined effort of operators, manufacturers, lenders and local governments will determine whether the transition disrupts livelihoods or delivers cleaner transport.

Why it matters

The deadline will affect thousands of drivers' incomes and the city's pollution levels.
