Maharashtra waives 25% land transfer fee to spur renewable projects
The Maharashtra government has eliminated a 25% land transfer levy for green energy firms, aiming to lower project costs and attract larger investments.
Maharashtra's cabinet, acting on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's instructions, approved a policy to cancel the 25% land transfer fee normally required when industrial land is transferred, as stipulated by the Maharashtra Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act. The fee, calculated on ready-reckoner rates, was previously paid to the district collector. Revenue department officials clarified that the waiver remains in effect only while the land is dedicated to renewable-energy projects; any subsequent residential, commercial use or sale will result in the fee being reclaimed with interest.
State officials, including Bawankule, said the measure will remove an extra cost layer for companies, reduce overall project expenses, and provide stronger impetus for large-scale green-energy investments. The policy aims to accelerate the development of solar, wind and other clean-energy installations across the state.
Why it matters
Removing the land fee lowers costs for renewable projects, encouraging investment and supporting India's clean-energy transition.
