Mahindra and Embraer discuss building C-390 support ecosystem in India

Mahindra Group and Brazil's Embraer are holding preparatory talks to set up an industrial and support network for the C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft in India.

Mahindra Group announced that it is in early-stage discussions with Embraer to create a full-scale industrial and support ecosystem for the C-390 Millennium military transport and aerial refuelling aircraft in India. The partnership targets the Indian Air Force's Medium Transport Aircraft programme and has identified Nagpur in Maharashtra as a potential location for a final assembly line. Under a strategic cooperation agreement signed in October, the firms will collaborate on localisation of production, supply-chain creation and MRO services, building on an earlier pact from February 2024.

Both parties highlighted the rapid allocation of land by the Maharashtra government and the alignment with India's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India goals. The initiative will proceed only if the Indian government selects the C-390 and places an order with the IAF. Mahindra and Embraer intend to integrate Indian aerospace companies into the ecosystem for manufacturing, training and lifecycle support.

Why it matters

The deal could boost India's defence manufacturing base and create high-tech jobs if the C-390 wins the IAF contract.
