Maine faces record heating costs as Republican policies tighten aid

Rep. Chellie Pingree warns that soaring heating-oil prices and cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will make this winter especially hard for low-income Mainers.

Maine’s winter outlook is bleak, with heating-oil prices hitting a historic $6.02 a gallon, up almost 79% from the same week last year, meaning a 250-gallon fill now costs roughly $1,490. Gasoline sits near $4.40 per gallon, while SNAP enrollment has fallen by 13%—13,000 fewer participants, including 7,000 children—and an additional 31,000 residents may lose MaineCare coverage within the next year. Rep. Chellie Pingree blames these hardships on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by Donald Trump, which cut Medicaid by $1.2 trillion and SNAP by $211 billion over ten years while granting massive tax breaks to the wealthy and funding a $175 billion boost to the Department of Homeland Security.

The legislation also underpins a surge in ICE activity, exemplified by the July 13 shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford. The ongoing conflict in Iran and the resulting Strait of Hormuz disruptions have further driven up energy costs. Pingree urges Speaker Mike Johnson to end the House recess, restore assistance programs, and reverse energy-related tax cuts to protect Mainers from an unaffordable winter.
