Maintenance worker opens fire at South Los Angeles senior residence, three injured
A 60-year-old maintenance employee at the Progressive Home for the Elderly shot coworkers in the lobby, leaving three staff members hospitalized.
Video evidence shows Darryl Arnette Barnes, a 60-year-old maintenance worker at the Progressive Home for the Elderly, pulling a handgun from a shopping cart and opening fire on coworkers in the facility’s lobby on Monday. Before the shooting, he reportedly announced he was “tired of this.” The assault left three staff members - a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 60s - hospitalized, one of them in critical condition while the others are listed as stable.
LAPD Captain Mike Bland confirmed that all victims, including the suspect, were employees of the home, which houses about 100 low-income seniors. Barnes was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, held on $4 million bail, and faces a potential life sentence. Pastor Jason Malveaux of the affiliated Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church expressed prayers for peace after the incident.
