Majetín to hold referendum on expanding local sand and gravel quarry
The council of Majetín announced a local referendum to decide on Zepiko's plan to extend sand-gravel mining on municipal land, amid resident worries about water, noise and traffic.
Majetín's municipal council declared a referendum to let citizens decide on Zepiko's request to broaden sand-gravel extraction within the village's cadastral area. Mayor Miroslava Zavadilová emphasized that the poll aims to give each voter an equal voice on matters affecting daily life, including transport, noise, dust, safety and the area's long-term character. Zepiko's brochure explains that the expansion would not increase overall mining volume or related traffic, and it proposes moving operations beyond the railway line.
The company also offers a substantial financial contribution to the municipality and discounts on its products. The referendum wording asks residents to approve or reject the extension of mining stages six and seven, with both versions approved by the interior ministry. The outcome will be binding for Majetín, and municipal elections are scheduled for early October.
