Major $238 Million Upgrade of Roy’s 5600 South Corridor Nears Completion

The $238 million reconstruction of 5600 South and its I-15 interchange in Roy is essentially finished, with only minor work remaining.

The $238 million upgrade of the busy 5600 South corridor and its I-15 interchange on the eastern edge of Roy is now largely complete, with only minor details pending after three years of work. The two-mile stretch between I-15 and 3500 West now carries two lanes each way plus a center turn lane, replacing the former single-lane configuration, and the interchange has been reshaped to accommodate increased traffic from expanding neighborhoods and the Northrop Grumman Sentinel missile-defense complex.

Utah Department of Transportation purchased roughly 60 parcels along the southern side of the road, demolishing mainly single-family homes to make room for the widening. City Manager Matt Andrews highlighted the improvement’s role in easing peak-hour congestion and supporting future growth, while UDOT spokesman Mitch Shaw noted similar pressures west of I-15 in Davis and Weber counties. A ceremony will be held Thursday afternoon at Roy Elementary School to celebrate the project’s completion, and other UDOT initiatives, such as a new I-15 intersection at 1800 North and the northward extension of the West Davis Corridor, remain underway.

Why it matters

The new lanes and interchange will ease congestion and support economic growth in a rapidly expanding part of northern Utah.
