Major blockage halts cargo traffic on the Danube near Constanța port
Around kilometre 280 of the Danube, more than 100 barges and 30 vessels are stranded, stopping freight movement to and from the Port of Constanța.
Cargo traffic on the Danube remains suspended at kilometre 280, where more than 100 barges and 30 push-boats and self-propelled vessels are stuck, blocking shipments to and from the Port of Constanța. The Association of Shipowners and River Port Operators of Romania (AAOPFR) and the Constanța Port Business Association (CPBA) accuse the agencies RA AFDJ Galaţi and MTI of inaction, noting no dredging or resource deployment has begun.
They stress that the standstill is generating substantial economic damage, delivery delays and major logistical disturbances. Although operators have pooled resources to explore alternative routes, they are not permitted to conduct dredging themselves. The organisations warn that each day of delay heightens the risk of the blockage evolving into a broader river-transport crisis.
Why it matters
The Danube blockage threatens regional trade and could escalate into a major logistics crisis if not resolved.
