Major pipe rupture disrupts Bacău water supply, city deploys emergency tanks

A break in the main water conduit serving Bacău halted distribution, prompting the municipality to install temporary reservoirs with repairs slated for Saturday afternoon.

A significant rupture occurred on the Valea Uzului-Bacău water transmission line, specifically on the segment between MHC Stejaru and the Bărâți treatment station, as announced by the municipal authorities. The break, caused by a fissure in a 1000 mm PREMO pipe, was discovered after excavation work began around 02:00, and CRAB crews are working to locate the exact point and replace the damaged section. The city has warned inhabitants to keep water reserves and has installed a network of temporary reservoirs at dozens of sites across Bacău, including schools, street intersections and public buildings; however, the water in these tanks is not suitable for drinking or cooking.

Several neighborhoods, such as Gherăiești and Șerbănești, remain unaffected. Mayor Lucian Viziteu said the repair work should be completed by about 16:00 on Saturday. Residents are urged to use the supplied water only for non-potable purposes until normal service resumes.

Why it matters

Bacău residents face a water shortage, and the city’s emergency measures aim to prevent a larger public health issue.
