Majority of British 18-24 year olds favor optional year of national service
A poll of 2,176 British adults shows 60% of 18-24-year-olds would welcome a year of national service if offered.
A recent Focaldata poll of 2,176 British adults, funded by With Honor, explored attitudes toward a mandatory year of national service. Among 18-24-year-olds, 60% expressed interest in participating, with just 12% dismissing the idea outright. Over half of this age group regard service as an opportunity, whereas older respondents tend to see it as an obligation.
The survey also found that 73% of employers would be more likely to hire someone who completed a year of service. Political figures from across the aisle, including Al Carns and Tom Tugendhat, highlighted the potential benefits for resilience and community support. Cost estimates for a full-time program run around £15,000 per participant, sparking debate over funding responsibilities.
