Malaysia and Thailand set up joint system to speed flood aid distribution
The Malaysian consulate in Songkhla and Thai officials have agreed on a new mechanism to coordinate flood relief supplies for residents in southern Thailand.
During a meeting with a delegation from the Perlis Journalists Association, Consul General Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi detailed a bilateral arrangement to improve flood relief logistics in southern Thailand. Designated warehouses will receive Malaysian supplies, after which the Songkhla Governor's Office will oversee delivery to affected communities. The agreement allows Malaysian NGOs to distribute aid if Thai manpower falls short, with Thai authorities providing oversight.
The coordination also covers potential flood assistance to Malaysia's northern states under a reciprocal understanding. Sarkawi recalled the confusion of last year's Hat Yai floods, when relief items lacked clear storage and distribution plans. He urged Malaysians planning trips to the area between now and January to watch water level reports, especially for the Sungai Golok, and to postpone travel if danger signs appear. The consulate will issue more frequent weather alerts via its website and social media.
