Malaysia appoints retired Lt. Gen. Ahmad Norihan as new facilitator for Thailand peace talks

Malaysia’s National Security Council named retired Lt. Gen. Ahmad Norihan bin Jalal the new facilitator for negotiations in Thailand’s southern border provinces, succeeding Datuk Haji Mohd Rabin bin Basir.

The council announced that Ahmad Norihan, a former senior military officer, will lead the peace dialogue with insurgents in southern Thailand. He replaces Datuk Haji Mohd Rabin, whose term has ended. Norihan spent more than 33 years in the Malaysian Armed Forces and served as the 17th director-general of defence intelligence from August 2020 to November 2023. His appointment signals continuity in Kuala Lumpur’s effort to support a resolution to the long-running conflict.

Why it matters

The appointment could influence the stalled peace process in Thailand’s southern conflict, affecting regional stability.
