Malaysia approves RM172 million for new immigration posts along Sarawak border
The Ministry of Home Affairs approved three immigration-related projects on the Sarawak-Kalimantan border worth RM172 million.
In a parliamentary written reply, the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed approval of three immigration projects along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border, allocating RM172 million in total. The initiatives comprise a RM100 million refurbishment of the Tebedu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security complex in Serian, slated for completion in January 2029; a RM50 million construction of the Serikin Immigration Post and quarters in Bau, expected by December 2027; and a RM22 million build of the Telok Melano Post and quarters in Sematan, due by December 2028.
The ministry also highlighted five other Sarawak border projects funded under a RM1 billion nationwide allocation, including upgrades in Limbang and pending works in Sabah such as the Bantul-Lumbis and Serudong-Simanggaris complexes, whose schedules depend on procurement and bilateral talks with Indonesia. Clarifications were made that earlier quoted cost figures for some Sabah projects do not reflect actual expenditures to date. The announcement responds to a query from Datuk Ali Biju about the overall RM1 billion border-facility investment.
Why it matters
Upgrading these facilities will improve border security and facilitate trade between Malaysia and Indonesia.
