Malaysia awaits Indonesia's response on haze-fire assistance request

Malaysia's foreign and environmental ministries say they have not yet received a full reply from Indonesia about the help needed to combat forest-fire haze.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability have reported that Indonesia has not yet provided a complete answer regarding the type of assistance Malaysia can offer for the ongoing haze caused by forest fires. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil affirmed that Malaysia remains prepared to send firefighting resources should they be needed. At a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressed the value of maintaining good diplomatic relations with Indonesia and reiterated the standing offer of support.

The cabinet was briefed by Natural Resources Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup on the latest haze developments, including Indonesia's announcement of enforcement actions against eleven companies. So far, no Malaysian firms have been identified as participating in the forest-burning activities in Indonesia.

Why it matters

The haze affects air quality and health across the region, and cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia is crucial for effective mitigation.
