Malaysia earmarks major budget boost for social welfare and disability support

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development says the 2027 budget allocates substantial funds to the Department of Social Welfare for expanded care services and assistance to seniors and persons with disabilities.

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development announced that the upcoming 2027 budget will provide a large allocation to the Department of Social Welfare, positioning the spending as a social investment rather than mere aid. The resources will support the creation of two National Integrated Care Centres of Excellence in Penang and Sarawak, and a reduction in service tax on elderly care to make services more affordable.

Assistance for seniors and persons with disabilities will be increased, including higher monthly care payments and broader eligibility for workers' allowances. Additionally, fifteen community-based rehabilitation centres will be upgraded to offer specialised therapy for conditions such as Down syndrome. The ministry emphasized collaboration with private providers and community groups to ensure that children, women, families, the elderly and disabled can live with dignity and greater self-reliance.

Why it matters

The budget increase aims to improve care and financial support for Malaysia's aging and disabled populations.
