Malaysia expands nationwide consultations on senior-citizen protection bill
The government has broadened public consultations across all states for a draft Parents’ Care Bill aimed at safeguarding senior citizens from neglect and abuse.
In Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the draft Parents’ Care Bill will undergo expanded consultations nationwide, incorporating input from federal and state ministries, NGOs and local residents. A public survey has been launched to ensure the proposal reflects real-world concerns about elder neglect, abuse and exploitation. The bill is slated for introduction in Parliament early next year, but current protections remain in force through existing laws and a RM600 monthly aid for eligible seniors.
The Ministry also highlighted its network of 234 senior activity centres serving over 50,000 members and home-help services that assist more than 9,000 elders via 2,000 volunteers. These efforts are part of the broader Malaysia Care Strategic Framework and Action Plan 2026-2030 to strengthen the elderly-care ecosystem.
