Malaysia finalises Natural Gas Roadmap to boost energy security and diversify supply
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir announced the completion of a Natural Gas Roadmap aimed at strengthening Malaysia's gas supply resilience amid global market volatility.
At the Malaysian Gas Symposium 2026, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the government is finalising a Natural Gas Roadmap to guide the sector's growth in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan. The strategy calls for expanding domestic gas production, securing multiple LNG sources and building the Third Regasification Terminal in Lumut, slated for commercial operation in the second quarter of 2029. It also addresses the distinct needs of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with plans for virtual pipelines and offshore gas projects.
Under the National Energy Transition Roadmap, natural gas is expected to provide 56% of Malaysia's primary energy by 2050, supporting electricity reliability as renewables expand. The roadmap promotes carbon capture, utilisation, storage and biomethane where viable, urging the industry to cut emissions while increasing economic value. Ministry of Economy secretary-general Datuk Seri Nor Azmie Diron highlighted the balance of security, affordability and sustainability, while Malaysian Gas Association president Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh called for collaborative solutions.
Why it matters
The roadmap aims to secure Malaysia's gas supply, crucial for industry and electricity, while reducing reliance on volatile global markets.
