Malaysia keeps 30% Bumiputera ownership rule for strategic property deals
The Economy Ministry confirmed that the minimum 30% Bumiputera equity rule for high-value property transactions by GLCs and GLICs remains unchanged.
According to a written reply posted on the parliament website, the Economy Ministry affirmed that the minimum 30% Bumiputera equity requirement for strategic, high-impact property acquisitions by government-linked companies and investment firms remains in effect. The guideline, introduced on July 13, 2022, is intended to advance the Bumiputera economic empowerment agenda. The ministry answered queries from Lim Guan Eng concerning a suggested increase of the quota to 50% for private firms disposing of assets worth more than RM20 million, and whether the threshold could revert to 30%. After reviewing stakeholder feedback, the government decided to implement the rule through administrative measures and will continue to track its impact, adjusting policies as needed based on economic developments.
Why it matters
It shows Malaysia's continued commitment to affirmative action policies in key economic sectors.
