Malaysia launches five-day air-quality forecast tool for haze warnings
Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup announced that the MyCMAQ system can provide five-day air-quality and haze forecasts across Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
During a question-time session, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup said the Malaysian Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (MyCMAQ) now delivers five-day forecasts of air quality and haze for the whole of Malaysia and neighboring Southeast Asian nations. Developed by the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the tool provides detailed, high-resolution data on pollutant concentrations, enabling citizens to prepare for potential haze episodes.
Kurup urged Malaysians to consult the platform for upcoming activities. He also highlighted that the Department of Environment operates 68 automatic monitoring stations that continuously track six major pollutants using equipment meeting United States EPA standards, ensuring reliable API readings. Recognising gaps in coverage, the ministry intends to expand the network, citing a request for an additional station in Betong, Sarawak. The initiative aims to make air-quality information more responsive and understandable for all segments of society.
Why it matters
Better haze forecasts help Malaysians protect health and plan daily activities.
