Malaysia launches national registry to improve suicide and fatal injury data
The Health Ministry unveiled the National Suicide and Fatal Injury Registry Malaysia (NSFIRM) to collect comprehensive data on suicides and fatal injuries.
At a ceremony in Meru marking World Self-harm Prevention Day, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad introduced the National Suicide and Fatal Injury Registry Malaysia (NSFIRM). Built in partnership with the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health and the Department of Forensic Medicine, the registry will capture detailed information on suicides and all fatal injuries, including motor-vehicle crashes. The launch coincided with the rollout of a new Postvention Services Clinical Guideline, which offers structured psychosocial support for those affected by suicide incidents.
Ahmad highlighted that the initiative builds on earlier efforts such as the MySAVE programme and recent training on handling suicide attempts after decriminalisation. He also referenced recent police data showing a slight decline in recorded suicides in 2025 after a rise in previous years.
Why it matters
Accurate data and clear post-vention guidance can help Malaysia reduce suicide rates and improve support for affected families.
