Malaysia launches RM1 million fund to finance IP valuation for SMEs

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will provide RM1 million to help local firms obtain professional intellectual-property valuations.

The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has set aside RM1 million to subsidise professional intellectual-property valuation for qualifying Malaysian businesses. Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the scheme targets start-ups and technology-driven SMEs that struggle to secure financing due to a lack of physical collateral. By obtaining official valuations, firms can better leverage their IP assets for bank loans, licensing agreements and investor interest.

The initiative was unveiled during the 2026 National Intellectual Property Commercialisation Conference and Exhibition. In parallel, the ministry will introduce Malaysia's first Intellectual Property Valuation Module to standardise valuation practices and train local experts. Together, the fund and the module aim to create a more robust IP-backed financing ecosystem.

Why it matters

It gives Malaysian innovators a new way to turn intangible assets into usable collateral for financing.
