Malaysia launches upgraded MyKad with 53 anti-fraud features starting tomorrow

The National Registration Department announced that starting tomorrow it will issue a new-generation MyKad across 40 branches that have the necessary printing equipment, allowing applicants to receive the card the same day. The updated identity card incorporates 53 security features, up from 23, including a QR code for verification, hologram technology, micro-text, ultraviolet security elements, laser engraving and a chip with higher-level encryption.

These measures are intended to strengthen identity checks and reduce the risk of counterfeit or misuse. The launch follows a pilot at the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected offices, after which the distribution will expand nationwide in stages. Authorities advise citizens not to rush to replace their current MyKad, as the phased approach is designed to prevent congestion at service counters.
