Malaysia monitors flood risks as Asian Games kick off in Japan
Malaysia's Asian Games delegation is closely tracking severe weather and flooding in Aichi and Gifu as the 2026 Games approach.
The Malaysian contingent for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games is keeping a vigilant eye on the severe rain and flooding affecting parts of Japan. Azlan Iskandar, the deputy chef de mission, explained that officials are in ongoing communication with the Games' local organizers to obtain real-time information. Japan raised a level-five emergency alert, the highest warning, after the Shonai River overflowed in Aichi and Gifu prefectures, leading authorities to urge residents to move to higher ground.
Despite the environmental challenges, Iskandar emphasized that the team will not underestimate the situation and will decide on any further steps after thorough assessment. He noted that similar weather has impacted other regions, including Tokyo, and expressed confidence in Japan's response. Malaysia aims for six gold, seven silver and 20 bronze medals across 13 sports, mirroring its recent performance in Hangzhou.
