Malaysia monitors students in Paris and Milan riots as university gains full status
Malaysia's Higher Education Ministry is tracking the safety of its students in Paris and Milan amid unrest, noting no direct involvement.
Malaysia's Higher Education Ministry is closely observing the situation of Malaysian students in Paris, France, and Milan, Italy, after recent riots that have disturbed daily travel in parts of both cities. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said no reports indicate students were directly involved, though the unrest has affected commuting to campuses and personal errands. The ministry is working with the Foreign Ministry and Malaysian embassies, which have issued safety guidelines and are prepared to relocate students to embassy premises if conditions worsen.
During the same event, i-CATS University College was presented with a Full University Status Recognition Letter by director-general Professor Datuk Dr Azlinda Azman, witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Abang Openg and Zambry. The upgrade aligns with federal and state goals to expand high-technology and engineering programmes and strengthen human-capital development in Sarawak.
Why it matters
Protecting overseas students and expanding university capacity are vital for Malaysia's global standing and regional growth.
