Malaysia offers Gulf support to aid Indonesia in battling cross-border haze

Malaysia's foreign minister said the country is ready to seek assistance from Gulf states to help Indonesia combat the trans-boundary haze from forest fires.

Malaysia's foreign minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, said the government stands ready to secure any form of assistance, even from Gulf countries, to support Indonesia's fight against forest-fire smoke that crosses borders. He will soon contact Indonesian foreign minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir to determine the exact needs. Hasan recalled a recent discussion with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Zayed Al Nahyan, who offered cooperation should Indonesia request help.

The minister highlighted the challenges of fighting fires deep in inaccessible terrain under thick haze, which hampers aircraft operations. He also reiterated Malaysia's willingness to deliver humanitarian relief to Yemen and urged external parties to push for peace in that conflict.

Why it matters

Regional haze threatens health and economies, and multilateral aid could improve fire-fighting effectiveness.
