Malaysia pivots to economic resilience as growth outpaces forecasts

Malaysia's economic strategy is shifting from efficiency to resilience, with officials highlighting fiscal reforms and the need to boost wages and entrepreneurship.

Speaking at the Youth Economic Forum, MIDA chairman Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz announced that Malaysia is reorienting its economic agenda from pure efficiency toward greater resilience, despite a backdrop of worldwide volatility. He pointed to key fiscal reforms—including the rationalisation of fuel subsidies and the enactment of the Fiscal Responsibility Act—that have bolstered the nation’s fiscal health. Zafrul warned that policy changes must be accompanied by social safeguards to protect vulnerable groups while lifting overall income levels.

He urged a focus on wage growth tied to productivity, the creation of higher-paying positions, and the encouragement of entrepreneurship. Highlighting the impact of artificial intelligence, he noted that the young workforce could become a dividend if it translates into higher productivity, innovation, and integration of SMEs into global supply chains. The chairman called for capital to build stronger firms and technology to develop better skills, ensuring that record investment flows benefit Malaysians directly.
