Malaysia pledges action against online Islamophobia and hate speech

At a senior gathering of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan highlighted the global surge in intolerance, xenophobia and religious hate, including Islamophobia. He announced Malaysia's support for the newly appointed UN special envoy tasked with tackling Islamophobia and noted the country's parallel appointment of a dedicated special representative. Hasan stressed the growing role of digital platforms in spreading hate and urged tech firms, civil society groups and UN member states to collaborate on building a safe, responsible online environment.

He also referenced Malaysia's participation in a Global Conference on Inter-faith and Inter-cultural Dialogue organized with Morocco, the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and UNAOC. The minister affirmed Malaysia's readiness to work with UNAOC and the Friends Group to close gaps, counter hateful narratives and protect diversity as a shared strength.
