Malaysia pledges sustainable tourism growth at Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macao

Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to a tourism sector that balances growth with environmental and cultural protection, as stated by Deputy Minister Chiew Choon Man at the GTEF 2026 in Macao.

Malaysia used its participation in the 12th Global Tourism Economy Forum in Macao to reiterate a vision of tourism that delivers economic benefits while safeguarding natural and cultural assets. Deputy Minister Chiew Choon Man told a high-level panel that success should be measured beyond visitor numbers, emphasizing alignment with the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030 and the 13th Malaysia Plan. He outlined ongoing promotion of nature-based and community-driven tourism, and stressed that the Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign places environmental stewardship on all stakeholders.

Citing the Malaysia MADANI agenda, he pointed to government investment in UNESCO heritage sites and forest reserves as long-term tourism assets. The Malaysian Homestay Experience Programme, with 584,000 visits and RM41.14 million earnings as of August 2026, was highlighted as a driver of rural livelihoods and authentic cultural experiences. The forum also featured officials from South Korea, EXO Travel Group and Shanghai Jinjiang International Hotels.
