Malaysia raises electricity subsidy ceiling to 800 kWh per month
The Malaysian government will extend electricity-subsidy protection to households using up to 800 kWh a month, up from the previous 600 kWh limit, effective until 31 December.
From September through 31 December, Malaysia will broaden its electricity-subsidy shield to cover domestic consumers whose monthly usage reaches 800 kWh, rather than the former 600 kWh cap. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the move as a swift response to higher bills caused by increased consumption during hotter weather and haze episodes. Under the new arrangement, qualifying households will be exempt from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment mechanism, retail surcharges and the eight-percent Sales and Service Tax.
The policy was finalized after a dedicated meeting that involved the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra), the Energy Commission and the national utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd. Anwar said the Madani government will continue to assess fuel prices and energy-market developments to balance affordability, supply security and sector sustainability. He also thanked Petra, the Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional for their role in implementing the change.
