Malaysia ramps up EV technician training as electric car registrations surge

PRO-NET, a subsidiary of PROTON Holdings, announced new training programmes and certifications to build an EV-focused workforce as Malaysia’s electric-vehicle registrations climb sharply.

Malaysia’s electric-vehicle market accelerated this year, with 47,508 EVs registered from January to August, exceeding the full-year total of 2025. Proton e.MAS accounted for about 61% of August’s BEV registrations, prompting PRO-NET, owned by PROTON Holdings, to expand its after-sales capabilities. The company is collaborating with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and TVET MARA to deliver the e.MAS Certified Technician Programme and the e.MAS Certified Service Advisor Programme, focusing on high-voltage systems, safety protocols, and customer service.

Training combines classroom instruction, on-the-job exposure, internships and certifications, and a new Electrified Excellence Competition evaluates practical competence across 45 dealerships. In August, 37 technicians from 25 authorised service centres achieved Level 2 EV certification after completing seven modules and rigorous assessments. The effort aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, which stresses talent development for high-value, technology-intensive industries.

Why it matters

A skilled EV workforce is essential for Malaysia’s growing electric-car market and broader industrial modernization.
