Malaysia reaffirms deep ties with Philippines, backs 2026 ASEAN chairmanship
Malaysia reiterated its close partnership with the Philippines, emphasizing cooperation in ASEAN, trade, investment and Mindanao peace during a Manila reception.
Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino used a National Day reception in Manila to reaffirm the deep, practical relationship between the two neighbours. He voiced strong backing for the Philippines’ upcoming 2026 ASEAN chairmanship, citing collaboration on trade, investment, the digital economy, education, tourism and halal cooperation. The ambassador highlighted ongoing peace-building efforts in Mindanao and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, congratulating the recently concluded BARMM election and linking regional stability to economic opportunity.
He also called for ASEAN-wide dialogue to address humanitarian crises in West Asia, Palestine, Gaza and Europe. The event gathered senior Philippine officials, members of the diplomatic corps and business leaders, showcasing the breadth of bilateral cooperation and people-to-people connections. Castelino concluded that shared geography, history and culture bind Malaysia and the Philippines as they pursue a more peaceful and resilient region.
