Malaysia records over 500 commercialised patents worth more than RM2 billion
Malaysia's research ecosystem has logged more than 500 matched patents valued at over RM2 billion, according to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Through the Malaysian R&D Commercialisation Portal, the country has documented over 500 matched patents with a combined worth of more than RM2 billion, spanning more than 120 active research missions. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir presented these figures at the University Research and Innovation Investment Summit 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, describing them as proof of Malaysia's strong innovative capacity.
He warned that many promising ideas remain confined to universities and emphasized the creation of a dedicated platform to connect researchers with industry, investors, and partners. Zambry also appealed to local businesses to look inward for technological solutions before turning abroad, noting a confidence gap that drives them overseas. Investors were encouraged to view university researchers as innovators and potential business collaborators. The three-day summit will focus on nine strategic sectors, including AI, semiconductors, green technology and healthcare.
