Malaysia reviews adding caning to penalties for mule account fraud

The Malaysian government is examining a proposal to introduce caning as an extra punishment for crimes involving mule accounts.

Malaysia's cabinet is considering a new sanction that would add corporal punishment to existing sentences for offenses linked to mule accounts. Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah explained the move targets increasingly complex fraud networks and will involve a thorough analysis of legal suitability and impact. The proposal will be coordinated with the Attorney-General's Chambers and relevant ministries.

Recent police operations have seen extensive raids on fraud call centres, resulting in the detention of numerous individuals from masterminds to low-level operators. Shamsul emphasized that the strategy seeks to disrupt the entire chain of criminal activity, not just peripheral participants.

Why it matters

It could reshape penalties for financial fraud and affect how Malaysia combats organized crime.
