Malaysia's data centre sector to need 8.39 GW of power by 2030
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation says peak electricity demand from data centres in Peninsular Malaysia could reach 8.39 GW by 2030, with Johor and Selangor leading the load.
PETRA disclosed that the data centre sector in Peninsular Malaysia will likely require a peak electricity supply of 8.39 GW by 2030, based on current planning estimates. The bulk of this demand will come from Johor, projected at 4.42 GW, with Selangor accounting for 1.48 GW, reflecting their status as major data centre hubs. By August 2026, 45 data centres were operational, collectively drawing 6.04 GW from Tenaga Nasional Bhd through the National Grid.
The ministry highlighted the need for robust power infrastructure to accommodate this growth. In parallel, water consumption for data centres in Johor and Selangor is expected to climb to 389.04 million litres per day by 2030, a sharp increase from the 63.90 MLD currently recorded by the National Water Services Commission. The figures were provided in response to a query from Onn Abu Bakar regarding future electricity and water needs.
Why it matters
Rising power and water needs for data centres will shape Malaysia's energy planning and infrastructure investments.
